100% British wool fabric from UKFT member Marton Mills

15/05/2019

UKFT Member Marton Mills has developed a new range of herringbone fabrics made from yarn that has been dyed, spun, woven and finished in Yorkshire.

The 100% British wool Leathley range comprises a 600gm jacketing and coating fabric featuring a timeless herringbone design. Leathley is named after a local village in the Harrogate district of North Yorkshire, England.

The yarn is created from wool fibre from ancient British sheep breeds, the Masham and the Bluefaced Leicester. Thanks to its local processing in Yorkshire, the natural and renewable fabric boasts a low carbon footprint, while wool’s unique properties means it can regulate the wearer’s temperature in all weather conditions.

Laura Watts, managing director of Marton Mills, said: “We are delighted to introduce this new range, which is proudly created in our local area. It is great to showcase the talents and expertise of our industry, whilst producing a fabric which is sustainable.”

Marton Mills was established in 1931 and is a traditional British family-owned and managed textile mill, steeped in heritage and driven by innovative design. Nestled in the heart of Wharfedale, West Yorkshire, the company produces premium fabrics for a range of end uses including fashion and interiors.

The mill provides a fully-integrated service and all processes are managed in-house ensuring security and continuity of supply. Offering a stock supported range with no minimum order level, Marton Mills manufactures in excess of 1,000 product lines in a range of pure wools including tweeds, Meltons and a variety of blends.

The firm has invested in state of the art technology including new Dornier looms, which has increased production capacity, increased product ranges and flexibility whilst delivering further efficiencies.

Marton Mills attributes a significant portion of its success to its highly skilled workforce, priding itself on a strong family ethos and a long-serving workforce stretching across multiple generations.

Through shared ownership, Marton Mills works closely with Roberts Dyers and Finishers in nearby Keighley, ensuring that its high standards are maintained throughout the entire production process. Finishes from a simple Teflon coating, rainwear proof, a flame retardant finish or the latest Nanosphere technology can be applied to meet various end use specifications.
