Makers HQ offers free sewing and pattern cutting courses for beginners

UKFT academic member Makers HQ is running free sewing and pattern cutting courses for beginners at its training studio in Plymouth starting in October.

The training, accredited by ABC Awards, is aimed at people wanting to develop skills, knowledge and understanding in pattern cutting and garment construction.

There are three courses available running two days a week for eight weeks starting in October, January and April.

The course will cover:

  • Workplace Health and Safety
  • Measuring the standard figure
  • Principles of pattern cutting and marking
  • Fabric estimating and lay planning
  • Basic Block adaptation
  • Sewing on industrial machinery
  • Garment construction

The units involved are:

  • Pattern Construction (Industrial)

You will learn how to make patterns, manipulate patterns according to measurements, lay up and cut out and work safely within the fashion studio using various equipment.

  • Garment Construction (Industrial)

You will learn basic technical knowledge and practical skills in garment construction and using industrial sewing machinery. Classes will include how to use interfacing, insert a zip and use an industrial presser safely.

​Upon completion, candidates will have the opportunity to progress to a Level 2 Certificate in Fashion and Textiles or an Apprenticeship.
