Cotton Industry War Memorial Trust

The Cotton Industry War Memorial Trust (CIWMT), is a registered charity that came together from an amalgamation of Textile Unions, Textile Employers’ Associations and the Board of Trade & Industry. The newly created Trust provides funding for good causes with links to the textile industry, across the North West of England.

The Trust works closely with the Lancashire Textile Manufacturers’ Association (LTMA), a UKFT federated member, to support key areas of interest across its membership, with particular emphasis on the following:

  • Industry Approved Courses
  • Graduate Study Support
  • Technician Training
  • Apprenticeships

Members can apply for financial support from the LTMA, who hold an amount of £40,000 every year, to provide match funding for training. Employers can apply for up to 50% of the costs associated with training from the categories listed above. The LTMA manages the Scheme and applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis.

In addition to the skills training it provides, the LTMA also works with the CIWMT to manage applications for the Convalescence Scheme. Today, the Convalescence Scheme is available for current and former cotton textile industry employees who have worked within the sector (usually in carding, spinning, winding, twisting, warping, weaving, dyeing or finishing) within the last 40 years by utilising two commercial Hotels in Blackpool. Former employees can stay at the hotel if they meet the eligibility criteria. A Doctor’s note is required for acceptance. The Scheme covers the accommodation costs and allows former employees to enjoy some relaxation time, as a payback for their service to the industry.

Other areas of support from the Trust include education grants and/or training bursaries to the Universities of Bolton and Manchester. These bursaries are specifically for PhD students who wish to pursue a career in the cotton textile industry. The Trust also provides a travel bursary via the Bradford Textile Society to Premiere Vision in Paris to students who enter a textile competition organised by the society.

The Trust occasionally supports the British Textile Bi-Annual Event covering Blackburn, Accrington, Burnley and Nelson over a six-week period which covered the former mill towns along the Leeds-Liverpool Canal network.
