Named after Davy Jones’ Locker – an idiom for the bottom of the sea – Davy J was founded by Helen Lofts, circular economy advocate, wild swimmer, economist and winner of Women of the Future Awards for Entrepreneurship. Davy J revealed its first British-made collection in 2017 with a line of mix & match pieces designed to be worn as a set, layered, or styled with other swimwear essentials.

Davy J is on a Mission

At the heart of Davy J’s mission statement is the aim of inspiring authentic connections with the ocean, and this extends beyond swimwear style and design. Using ECONYL yarn for the collection, for every 100 Davy J suits sold, at least 18kg of waste is regenerated, of which 4.5kg are ghost fishing nets collected by volunteer divers and fishing communities in collaboration with The Healthy Seas Initiative.

Working with suppliers that uphold Davy J’s sustainable practices, the carbon life cycle of each style is taken into consideration. The impact of emission heavy processes, such as yarn processing, fabric production and dyeing, are reduced by vendors committed to innovative environmental policies. Davy J’s fabric mill only uses renewable energy, produces its own electricity internally (enough to light up 12 Eiffel Towers a year), recycles 83% of its water and 99% of waste from production.

Striving to fight the trend for throwaway fashion, Davy J prides itself on being a seasonless brand, creating timeless products that won’t go out of fashion. Offering a repair service to extend the life of each suit, Davy J encourages customers to return old pieces when they finally do reach end of life for recycling or regeneration in an attempt to combat the 206,456 tonnes of textile waste that enters landfill each year in the UK.

Off the back of significant growth over the last two years, Davy J took the decision to join UKFT to gain access to its expert knowledge, contacts and opportunities – particularly around production, overseas supply and retail, opening up into wholesale markets and investment opportunities.
