Achieving B-Corp certification with Johnstons of Elgin

12/09/2023

Leaders from Johnstons of Elgin will outline their journey to B-Corp Certification at the upcoming Sustainability in UK Textiles conference on 28 September in London, passing on useful advice for companies considering embarking on the same route.

Greg Rorison, Private Label Director, will discuss why the B-Corp was a good fit for the luxury cashmere and wool manufacturer, while Sustainability Specialist Iain Findlay will explain the challenges and work required to achieve the certification.

B Corp Certification demonstrates that a business meets high standards of verified performance, accountability, and transparency, from employee benefits and charitable giving to supply chain practices and input materials.

The process prompted Johnstons of Elgin to make change to its Articles of Association, requiring a commitment to a legal change to reflect the importance of looking after people and the planet, as well as profit.

During their presentation, Greg and Iain will highlight some of the challenges they faced along the way, what a difference it makes to business today and the next steps from here.

SUSTAINABILITY IN UK TEXTILES 2023

Solutions, lessons and definitions

The second UKFT Sustainability conference on 28 September in London will build on the success of the 2022 event by providing clear, industry-relevant help and guidance specifically for the UK textile industry. The speakers will offer advice on how to improve performance, measure and monitor progress, and communicate environmental credentials. The conference will give a clearer overview of the relevant environmental merits (or otherwise) of various fibres and certification schemes and an outline of the current landscape for sustainability legislation.

Registration is now open for leaders in UK textile manufacturing. Space is limited so unfortunately we are unable to offer places for stakeholders from the wider UK textile industry. If you are from a business manufacturing textiles in the UK and wish to apply for a place, please contact info@ukft.org
