Fermoie introduces new fine fabric collections inspired by circus shows and artistic techniques

03/07/2023

UKFT member Fermoie is a British textile company offering a wide range of fabrics designed and made in-house, using their own colour-mixing and production techniques. Fermoie is a British textile company that creates, designs and manufactures fabrics in-house mainly for the interior sector. Established in 2010 by Tom Helme and Martin Ephson, founders of the UK paint and wallpaper manufacturer Farrow & Ball, Fermoie now employs 50 people across its design studio, production facility and showroom in Marlborough (Wiltshire). Hannah Brown, Project Manager at Fermoie, commented:

“Fermoie is a creator of fine fabrics, all designed and manufactured entirely in-house using its own proprietary colour-mixing and production techniques. Every Fermoie design begins with the drawn line, with the full repeat pattern meticulously created by hand, on paper, before it’s translated to screen engraving. The colours are created, mixed and edited according to a carefully considered palette to ensure every combination matches perfectly, ensuring aesthetic harmony, artistic balance and design integrity.”

In addition to using its own proprietary colour-mixing and production techniques, Fermoie uses cloth in line with its environmental commitment. Hannah said:

“All cloth is exclusive to Fermoie and made to the company’s specification. In line with its environmental commitments, 100% linen is woven to the studio team’s specification from highly sustainable flax grown locally to the mill. Cottons, union cloths and linen sheers are produced in Lancashire – the traditional home of British textile-making – by the first UK cotton mill to receive Soil Association and Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) accreditation.”

Each collection starts with the creation of a new design to which is added original colour and texture combinations. Tom Helme, Co-Founder of Fermoie, explained:

“For our studio every collection begins with pencil on paper creating fresh and original designs which remain recognisably and essentially Fermoie. It’s a genuinely creative process, in which we’re forever mixing new colours, trialling new textures, and finding new ways to express the things that inspire us in design and print.”

New fine fabric collections for Spring 2023

Fermoie launched two new fine fabric collections for Spring 2023, ‘Circus’ and ‘Strié’. “Circus originated from a fleeting glance in a traditional Big Top one summer’s day; Strié perfectly captures our love of weave and a colour-filled brush,” said Tom Helme.

As its name indicates, the Circus collection is inspired by circus shows and the mesmerising effect that such spectacles can produce. The collection features repeating patterns printed on a linen-cotton fabric and available in 15 colourways. The Strié collection refers to a traditional artistic technique that involves brushing a comb through wet paint to obtain interesting textural effects. Fermoie translated this technique to a 100% cotton fabric available in 23 colourways.
