UKFT Rise Ambassador - Sophie Slater

UKFTRise-Sophie

Sophie co-founded Birdsong in 2014, an award winning social enterprise and cult fashion brand for people who dress in protest. Birdsong was inspired by the skill and creativity in women’s community groups with the vision of building a brand that promised no sweatshops and no Photoshop. Sophie believes in creating beautiful, sustainable clothes that empower the wearer, the worker and the community that binds us all together.

Birdsong began life as a feminist brand, making slogan tees and hell-bent on paying women workers a fair wage. The commitment to ethical and sustainable fashion is still at Birdsongs core but today they have grown to create a collection of wardrobe staples to totally transform their customers (out)look!

Birdsong creates clothing for women who dress in protest – against the fast nature of the fashion industry, the obsessive pursuit of trends and the systematic abuse of women in the production line.

Sophie and her team’s designs are dreamed up in house and then put into work with expert makers who face barriers to employment in the UK – from artists and printmakers to seamstresses and painters – and pay them London living wage to bring their creations to life.

Sophie sees it as Birdsong’s job, as a smaller, braver brand to create an alternative industry. Using natural, sustainable fibres and respectful labour practices, which strengthens not only the customer’s connection to one another, but to the Earth.

Birdsong encourages its customer to dress for their own protest. To go out, get curious and dress for the world they want.
