Glasgow Clyde College expands fashion and textile Modern Apprentice provision

01/04/2022

UKFT education partner Glasgow Clyde College is expanding its Modern Apprentice SVQ provision in 2022 with a variety of Fashion and Textiles qualifications. The Modern Apprentice Qualifications on offer will be:

  • GR9V 22 – Sewn Products at SCQF level 5
  • GR9V 22 – Textiles Manufacturing at SCQF level 5
  • GP69 23 – Bespoke Cutting and Tailoring at SCQF level 6
  • GK7T 23 – Manufacturing Textiles Products at level SCQF 7

A Modern Apprenticeship is a job which lets people earn a wage and gain an industry-recognised qualification. For employers, modern apprenticeships help develop their workforce by training new staff, and upskilling existing employees.

The impact: 92% of MAs stay in work once they’re qualified

Modern Apprenticeships offer the opportunity to enhance Scotland’s work-based learning system and reduce youth unemployment.

Employers who’ve taken on MAs are positive about the experience: 96% say those who’ve undertook a Modern Apprenticeship are more able to do their job. They also praised MAs for improving productivity, staff morale, and service and product quality.

MA qualifications below (as funded contribution from Gov)

GR9V 22 – Sewn Products at SCQF level 5 (Cut Materials, Manufacturing Sewn Products, Produce Samples, Finishing, Repair and Alterations)

Sewn products pathway

This pathway covers a variety of job occupations in the Scottish apparel cut, make and trim (CMT) sector and a range of other industries, eg car interiors manufacturing, personal protective equipment, soft furnishings, hand stitched and finished products, etc. Job roles include cutters, machinists, renovators, repairers,
assemblers, pressers.

GR9V 22 – Textiles Manufacturing at SCQF level 5 (Prepare for Textile Manufacturing, Produce Textile Products, Weave/Knit)

Textiles pathway

This pathway is suitable for roles in weaving, finishing, linking and knitting and covers occupations such as textile operative, quality control inspector, product tester, hand weaver and Harris Tweed weaver.

GP69 23 – Bespoke Cutting and Tailoring at SCQF level 6 (Take measurements, Prepare Materials, Bespoke Fitting, Handcrafted Basting/finishing)

Bespoke Cutter

A fully qualified cutter is able to measure the figure, analyse particular customer figurations or (figure variations) and cut a pattern to fit an individual customer requirement. They liaise with the customer in order to gain an understanding of specific customer needs. All this information is translated into the customer’s individual pattern – the cutter will then work closely with the tailor to create this individual bespoke garment.

Bespoke Tailor

A fully qualified tailor specialises in making coats and jackets, or trousers, skirts and waistcoats. Training as a coatmaker (or to make jackets) normally takes longer as there are an increased number of complicated processes involved in the construction of a jacket. The tailor will use traditional methods of tailoring and will be able to receive the cut and trimmed garment bundle from the cutter and skilfully assemble all the component parts, resulting in a garment(s) of the highest quality.

GK7T 23 – Manufacturing Textiles Products at level SCQF 7 (Service Textile Machinery and Equipment, Produce Prototype Samples, Product development, Finishing Process)

The qualification allows candidates to demonstrate competence in job related skills in their particular area of work and expertise and covers health and safety and continuous improvement of operations. Learners will also have the option to focus on more specific areas such as textile machinery and equipment maintenance, product development, design and working relationships.

There will be two intake dates per year with the next one being September 2022.

SVQ is available as stand-alone but with a cost contribution.
